Year: 2023
Team: John Jiang
Info: International Airport Terminal
The Neom Airport Terminal represents a groundbreaking approach to aviation architecture in the context of Saudi Arabia's visionary Neom development. The design draws inspiration from the dramatic desert landscape, with sweeping forms that echo the wind-sculpted sandstone formations of the region. The terminal's distinctive silhouette creates a powerful first impression for visitors arriving in this future city, while its innovative structure showcases advanced sustainable technologies.
The terminal's envelope employs smart glass technology and dynamic shading systems that respond to the harsh desert climate, maintaining comfortable interior conditions while minimizing energy consumption. The spatial organization optimizes passenger flow through a series of naturally lit, interconnected spaces that provide both efficiency and a sense of journey. The design incorporates traditional Middle Eastern architectural elements reinterpreted through a contemporary lens.
Sustainable features include large-scale photovoltaic arrays integrated into the roof structure, advanced water recycling systems, and passive cooling strategies inspired by traditional desert architecture. The project sets new standards for sustainable aviation architecture while creating a distinctive gateway that embodies Neom's ambitious vision for the future of urban development in the region.
